Where are plant stem cells found?

The stem cells in beauty products are obtained primarily from plants and fruits that can stay fresh for a long time, like Swiss apples, edelweiss, roses, date palms, grapes and gotu kola (a swamp plant).

Extracts of these stem cells—not the live cells themselves—are added to skin-care products (there are no actual stem cells in any beauty products). But what they do contain are the proteins and growth factors the stem cells produce, and this may be enough to trick old skin into acting young.

The short answer is naturally occurring botanicals full of antioxidants. These antioxidants can protect our skin from the damaging effect of UV rays and reduce inflammation.

For example, in a 2008 study published in the International Journal for Applied Science, plant stem cell extracts taken from the Uttwiler Spätlauber apple, a Swiss varietal developed in the eighteenth century to have an especially long shelf life, were shown to provide both a stimulating and protective effect on human skin cells (the apple stem-cell application increased in vivo cell turnover and UV resistance).

Stem cells in cosmetics: trends and future directions

Plant regeneration at the cellular and tissue level is a unique process. Similar to animals, the stem cells in plants have properties that help stimulate and regenerate plants after injury. The unique properties of plant stem cells have been a recent area of interest and focus both in developing new cosmetics and studying how these extracts/phytohormones will influence animal skin.

Plants are equipped with a robust mechanism for regeneration of their tissues under stress. Significant efforts have been put into understanding this mechanism in the expanding field of plant biotechnology. In animals, tissue regeneration occurs following a wound stimulus, resulting in the initiation of organ repair.

By contrast, the efforts made by the plants are not only for tissue repair from damage, but also for the development of a new plant. In other words, cutting the branch of a tree also results in a new bud/branch growth.

How Plant Stem Cells Work

Like human stem cells, plant stem cells are undifferentiated cells that can divide to produce more stem cells or become specialized cells. Sources for the stem cells range from flowers to apples to cranberries and other plant sources. When added to a skin care cream or serum, usually they are first broken open, and then they release high concentrations of antioxidants and growth factors.

Different plant stem cells have different effects. For instance, stem cells extracted from grape seeds have shown high anti-tumor-promoting activity. Products containing these stem cells can potentiate the photoprotective qualities of sunscreens. Verbascoside, found in lilac stem cell extract, helps with wound healing. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties and repairs DNA oxidative damage.

Stem cells have a strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, helping to protect against sun damage and prevent wrinkles. There is also evidence that stem cells can promote the production of new collagen, which can also make your skin appear more youthful.

Totipotent , Pluripotent, Multipotent Stem Cells

One important thing to note about stem cells is that they are not all the same. Not all stem cells can become any cell in the body, most stem cells are limited in the type of cell they can become, this phenomenon is referred to as potency. The more potent a stem cell, the greater the differentiation potential.

Totipotent stem cells: These stem cells are the most potent, and can differentiate into embryonic cell types. Embryonic cells can construct a living organism. A zygote (fertilized egg) is an example of totipotent stem cell. 

Pluripotent stem cells: Come from totipotent stem cells and can differentiate into just about every cell in the body.

 

Multipotent stem cells: Can only differentiate into cells within a particular family of cells. For example, a multipotent blood stem cell can differentiate itself into blood cell types such as lymphocytes or neutrophils, it cannot differentiate into a liver cell, skin cell, or other non-blood cell type.

In skin care, stem cells are usually obtained from PLANTS. The earliest plant stem cell research was done on Swiss apples (Uttweiler spatlauber), which were bred in the 18th century to have exceptional longevity. Today’s plant stem cell extracts come from a wide variety of sources, such as:
